How to Choose a Med Spa in Austin: 8 Questions to Ask First

Austin has no shortage of med spas, and from the outside, most of them look about the same: nice lighting, a menu of familiar treatment names, a form to fill out online. The differences that actually matter — who's holding the needle, what happens if something goes sideways, how carefully they listen before they inject — are harder to see from a website. So here's what we'd actually ask, if we were booking somewhere new ourselves.

1. Who is doing the injecting, specifically?

Not 'our team is medically trained' — a name, a credential, and how long that person has been injecting. In Texas, injectables can legally be administered by a range of providers under physician oversight, which means the range of experience out there is wide. Ask directly who will be in the room, and don't be shy about asking to see their credentials or recent work.

2. Is there a real consultation, or just a menu?

A good injector asks about your face before they talk about product. They look at your anatomy, your goals, your history, and they talk you through options — including the option of doing less than you asked for. If a consultation feels like a sales conversation, that's useful information.

3. What happens during the good faith exam?

Texas law requires a documented medical exam before most injectable treatments. This isn't paperwork for its own sake — it's where allergies, medications, prior filler, and contraindications get caught. A spa that rushes or skips this step is telling you something about how they operate everywhere else, too.

Questions worth asking before you book

  • Who is injecting me, and what's their background?
  • Can I see real client results, not just stock photos?
  • What products do you use, and why those specific ones?
  • Is there a documented medical exam before treatment?
  • What's your plan if I have a reaction or complication?
  • Will you tell me if I don't need what I'm asking for?
  • How do you handle bruising, swelling, or touch-ups?
  • Is the person I meet at consult the person who treats me?

4. What products do they actually use, and why?

Ask which brands of filler or neurotoxin they carry and what guides the choice for your face. A thoughtful answer references your anatomy and goals, not just what's in stock. Shops that rotate through whatever's cheapest that month tend to have a harder time explaining their reasoning.

5. Would they ever tell you no?

This might be the most telling question of all. The best injectors we know have said no to more requests than they've said yes to — because an ask doesn't suit someone's anatomy, or because a smaller, more conservative treatment will look better long-term than a dramatic one right now. A practice built around undetectable, natural-looking results isn't afraid to talk you out of overdoing it.

6. How do they handle the not-so-glamorous parts?

Bruising happens. Swelling happens. Ask how follow-up care and touch-ups are handled, and whether there's a real person to reach if you have questions after you leave. A practice that's upfront about aftercare before you book is usually just as upfront about everything else.

Red flags worth trusting your gut on: pressure to buy packages on your first visit, reluctance to show real before-and-afters, or an injector who can't clearly explain why they chose a specific product for your face.

What this looks like at The Wellness House

Leyla Guzmán leads every consultation and treatment personally, which means the person assessing your face is the same person holding the needle. Every new client appointment includes a documented good faith exam and an honest conversation about what will, and won't, serve your goals. It's a slower way to run a med spa — and it's exactly why hundreds of clients keep coming back.

If you're weighing where to go next, our guide to what happens during a first injectable appointment is a good next read, and our service guide walks through how we approach treatment planning overall.

Ready when you are.

Every plan starts with a conversation — no pressure, just a look at what would suit you. Book a consult or text us at (512) 487-6849.
